Dermatology Services

The Skin Group is committed to providing complete dermatology services to help our patients maintain the best skin health.

Our practice includes prevention, diagnosis and treatment services for a wide range of skin disorders and diseases, including:

  • Common skin diseases (i.e. psoriasis, acne, eczema, and warts)

  • Skin allergies and dermatitis

  • Skin cancers, including melanoma and basal cell carcinoma

  • Hair disorders

  • Nail diseases

  • Mole checks
  • General skincare

Dr. Robert Zax oversees dermatology services at The Skin Group. He is assisted by nurse practitioner Heather Mucci. Our dermatology services are complemented by The Skin Group Aesthetics team, which is dedicated to promoting good skin health and improved appearance through skin rejuvenating services, as well as a variety of physician-quality skin care products.

We also conduct in-office skin biopsies, which are then analyzed and evaluated by our Dermatopathology team led by specialists Dr. Vilma Fabre and Dr. Andrea Burch. Should a lesion require surgical removal, Dr. Zax may recommend an in-office removal. For more serious skin conditions such as basal cell carcinoma or squamous cell carcinoma, Dr. Zax may recommend Mohs microscopic surgery, which is conducted in-office by special evaluation and appointment.

Excimer Laser Therapy

The Skin Group is one of only two dermatology practices in Louisville trained and equipped to provide Excimer Laser therapy.

The Excimer Laser is especially effective for persons who suffer from psoriasis that has not responded adequately to traditional topical treatments and/or to phototherapy. Unlike phototherapy, the Excimer Laser operates with pinpoint accuracy, sparing normal skin surrounding the affected area. It is a promising treatment for localized and difficult to treat areas such as the scalp, elbows, knees and shins. In some patients, Excimer Laser treatments can help achieve partial or even complete remission. Dosage, number of treatments and effectiveness vary by patient. Side affects are minimal.

The Excimer Laser has also been proven to be an effective therapy for vitiligo, a skin pigmentation disorder.
